THE CHALLENGE OF MODERN ART INTERACTIVE GALLERY
Modern art comes alive in this hands-on space. Visitors enhance their understanding of this often challenging genre with interactive activities designed for all ages.
Walk Through a Painting
Visitors are able to step, literally, into Abraham Rattner’s April Showers painting to a zone where sight and touch are used for learning what art is.
Challenge Your Preconceptions
Hanging signs feature questions and comments regarding art. Visitors learn the responses to those comments and questions and express their own feelings about art on the magnetic word wall.
Explore the Language of Art
A semicircular structure depicts the six elements and six principles of design from Allen Leepa’s book, The Challenge of Modern Art. Visitors can make a work of art with paper and markers at the children’s art table or explore enriching puzzles, books, games and sculptural forms.
Make Your Own Masterpiece
Visitors have an opportunity to create art on a series of drawing easels and display their work.
Experience the History and Symbolism of Guernica
In this theater-like space, visitors find a full-size reproduction of Pablo Picasso’s (Spanish, 1881-1973) Guernica. A 9-minute audio and light show explains the history and symbolism of Guernica while each corresponding area of the mural is illuminated. The audio presentation is available in both English and Spanish.
